Shawn Frederking

Yuba College
Shawn Frederking began her community college career as an Instructional Associate in the Yuba College Writing and Language Development Center (WLDC) in 2008. As she began to interact with students in the WLDC, she became alarmed at the number of community college students who struggle with academic reading. Her subsequent inquiry into best practices for community college reading instruction led her to discover Reading Apprenticeship (RA), and she began immersing herself in RA training. After receiving her MA in January 2011, she began teaching English, in addition to her writing center work, and in July of 2013, she became an Associate Professor of English at Yuba College. As a Reading Apprenticeship community college consultant for WestEd’s Strategic Literacy Initiative (SLI), Ms. Frederking facilitates introductory Reading Apprenticeship workshops and online courses for community college faculty, staff, and administrators across the disciplines and co-facilitates the year-long Reading Apprenticeship Leadership Community of Practice. Ms. Frederking holds a BA in Liberal Studies; a Certificate in Teaching College Level Writing; and an MA in English, with an emphasis on language and literacy, from California State University, Chico. She also holds a Professional Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
